Seven winter gardening jobs you shouldn’t ignore

Once summer is done, many people think that the need for gardening stops. However, to keep your garden healthy and tidy, several small tasks should be regularly attended to. Keeping on top of these tasks now will prepare your outdoor space for spring, avoiding larger and more costly work later on.

Of course, garden maintenance can be time-consuming, which is why enlisting the help of a professional gardener to share some of the load during the colder months can be a smart move.

A gardener can support you with:

1. Turning the soil

An important winter task as it helps aerate the ground after it’s been compacted by rain - and let’s face it, we get a lot of it. Turning the soil helps bring nutrients to the surface and improve drainage, which prepares your beds and borders for successful spring planting.

2. Clearing weeds

You might think that weeds would disappear during the cold seasons, but weeds continue to grow in mild winter spells. By keeping on top of them now, you’ll stop them from spreading and competing with plants in spring.

3. Removing dead annuals

Old plants left in beds can wreak havoc on your green space as they may harbour pests and disease. A gardener can take the time to clear them, keeping borders tidy and ready for replanting. Plus, you’ll be able to compost the healthy ones to feed your garden next year.

4. Planting bulbs

Winter is not all about clearing; it’s also the perfect time to plant bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and crocuses - all of which will be ready to flower in early spring, adding a stunning mix of colours after the cold winter.

5. Grass cutting

Another job likely not associated with winter, but if temperatures are mild, your grass will still grow slowly. The occasional trim will help to keep your lawn neat, whilst also ensuring moss doesn’t take over - it’ll also save you a larger and more time-consuming job in spring.

6. General garden maintenance

Several small tasks can make a sizeable difference in keeping your garden manageable all year long. For example, clearing leaves and debris will ensure your paths and patios are safe for use. Whilst keeping your shed, tools and equipment tidy will mean that everything is ready and waiting for next year.

7. Pruning

Whilst trees and shrubs are dormant, winter is a great time to be pruning them - a job a professional will have no problem tackling. Not only does it encourage healthier growth and keep them in better shape, but it will also help prevent branches from becoming damaged in winter storms.
