Get your garden spring-ready

March 09, 2026 | by Peats Garden

The arrival of spring is often considered the time for a much-needed clear-out. The warmer weather and brighter days encourage us to declutter and reset, ready for the months ahead. Whilst we usually associate this feeling with our homes, the same can be said for our gardens, with plenty to do for an equally rewarding impact.

So, let’s get into it and uncover five ways to get your garden officially spring-ready.

First up, clear and clean

Speaking of resets, first on the list is a well-deserved clear and clean. Tackling and removing fallen leaves, twigs, and debris can prove therapeutic, much like cutting back dead perennials and grass for the ultimate fresh start feeling. Spring is a great time of year to pull early weeds before they can fully establish and take over, as well as adding healthy garden waste to compost. Finally, finish off by wiping down any fences and cleaning out your greenhouse.

Prepare and feed soil

Nothing screams a healthy garden quite like well-cared-for soil. Over winter, soil loses its nutrients, so feeding it early gives you a strong head start. Start by turning over your soil to aerate it, as well as removing stones and roots. Next, add compost and apply mulch to help retain moisture (and suppress weeds!). Remember, during winter, the soil experiences many days of heavy rainfall, so be sure to check drainage.

Repair and refresh

Your spring prep isn’t just about plants and soil; spend some time ticking off smaller maintenance jobs to avoid bigger (and more costly) tasks in summer. For instance, consider fences that may need repairing or patios and decking that need cleaning. If your garden shed is looking a little worse for wear, it’s a great time to whack out the paint brushes. Along with sharpening and oiling garden tools for warmer days spent in your green space.

Love your lawn

Winter can be tough on lawns, and they can often look a little tired after the cold months. To turn this around, start by raking to remove moss and aerating compacted areas. Reseed bare patches and apply a spring lawn feed to welcome grass that you (and your guests) can admire throughout the year. BBQ season has never looked so good!

Planting for the season ahead

Now that you’ve done all the groundwork, it’s time for the fun to begin. A well-cared-for garden needs the right plants and colour to be truly appreciated, so start by focusing on your early bloomers - such as daffodils and tulips. If you want to be really organised, try planning your garden layout first before even purchasing your plants for a well-considered space. You may also want to consider pollinator-friendly flowers that bees can enjoy, too, but mostly just enjoy brighter days spent outside, getting your garden ready for the months ahead.

Ready to get started? We don’t blame you. But if you fancy a little helping hand, get in touch and have your garden spring-ready before you know it.
