Christmas gardening jobs - what should you be doing in December?

December 08, 2025 | by Peats Garden

December might feel like the time to forget about the garden altogether, but there’s still plenty you can get done before winter really sets in. Whether you want to keep things tidy, get ahead for spring or simply make the garden look a bit more festive, a few small jobs now can make a big difference later on.

And the good news? Most of it is simple, low-effort and perfect for those short winter daylight hours.

Planting tasks

Even though it’s cold, there are still a few things you can plant at this time of year.

  • Spring bulbs - if you didn’t get round to bulb planting earlier in the autumn, you can still pop in tulips and other late bulbs now. They’ll thank you for it when spring arrives.
  • Bare-root hedging - December is ideal for planting bare-root or root-ball hedging. The plants are dormant, which means they settle in nicely over winter.
  • Indoor amaryllis - if you want something festive for the house, planting an amaryllis bulb now will give you big, bold blooms just in time for Christmas or early January.

General maintenance

With most plants dormant, December is a great time to tidy up the basics.

  • Prep the borders - dig over any empty beds, remove weeds and work in compost so the soil is ready for planting in spring.
  • Light pruning - some shrubs appreciate a winter tidy. Remove anything dead, damaged or diseased and cut back long, unruly stems.
  • Support climbing plants - winter winds can be rough on climbers, so tie back loose shoots and make sure trellises are secure.
  • Mulching - a layer of mulch around trees and shrubs helps protect roots from frost and keeps moisture in the soil.
  • Tools and structures - clean and sharpen tools, clear out gutters on sheds and greenhouses, and give everything a general once-over before the harsher weather arrives.

Harvesting and decorating

December is a brilliant month for winter produce. Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks and parsnips are all at their best now - and perfect for Christmas dinner.

It’s also a nice time to add some seasonal touches outdoors. Potted conifers, bay trees and winter planters bring a bit of life to an otherwise quiet garden. And of course, if you have a living Christmas tree, this is the time to bring it indoors and let it settle.

Help the wildlife

Food is scarce at this time of year, so a little support goes a long way. Clean out bird feeders, top them up regularly and make sure birds have access to fresh, unfrozen water. Even a simple dish on the ground helps.

Greenhouse and pots

Give your greenhouse or polytunnel a clean and tidy, to keep pests and mould at bay. It’s also a good chance to sort through old pots - clean the ones you’re keeping and recycle the ones past saving.
